Seeking freedom from the cord, I piece together the first cellular phone webcam. Hundreds of shots are displayed live on the web to tens of thousands of viewers.

I have become an avid Instagram user. Camera quality has dramatically improved, citizen journalism punctuates the news, and taking a picture of your dinner is completely normal.

Curated from now-defunct public webcam archives and taken nearly a decade apart, these pairings of mobile photos highlight both the similarities and the growth of mobile device capture and the ever-changing web.
